One Stop Hire Ltd has just added 17 Power Tower, Nano & NanoSP machines to its fast growing battery powered access fleet. Access products in general are our fastest growing product lines & this sits perfect in our strategy to deal with more “inside” trades, stated MD Steve Hitchen.

We chose Power Tower for the following reasons;

  4. Ease of doing business

The whole team at Power Tower have done us proud & without their swift & flexible approach we would have lost a major hire opportunity & I cannot thank them enough.

Since acquiring PSL & SJS Hire in Oct 2009 we have built the access fleet up to 70 machines now from a lowly beginning of 2 which unbelievably never went out hardly for PSL & one manager at the time commented that it would be best to sell them!! We estimate that on current customer demand & with the M&E customer base still growing we will hit 100 machines in the springtime.

On the 14th November 2012 the newly formed Lancashire Working Well Together Group held it`s first Safety & Health Awareness Day at the Park Hall Hotel in Charnock Richard near Chorley. WWT is a HSE backed initiative which promotes Health & Safety to SME contractors in 17 regions across the country.

One of the main topics was working at low heights & One Stop Hire was invited by the group to display & demonstrate its range of alloy & battery operated access products to the 300 plus delegates. One Stop Hire has invested heavily in these products this year & has seen massive growth in this sector.

Items highlighted were;

  • Turner Access – Betaguard Alloy Tower system.
  • Power Tower – Nano – NanoSP & Power Tower models
  • Youngman Boss – Minimax Tower & Minit Adjustable Podiums

One stop Hire was also supported by Hilti who displayed some of their new cordless tools & products.

The WWT working group is a perfect forum for our business, it is a regional organisation targeting SME contractors which is what we are all about & to get 300 potential customers coming to see you & your products in a day is a massive bonus & would take the sales team about 12 months to achieve in these times.

It is also a great initiative to offer FREE seminars & open days to the smaller contractors who sometimes struggle with Health & Safety information & new legislation.

We hope to support the Lancashire WWT group further in the future & thank them for involving us.

One Stop Hire Take Delivery of Their First KFS Plant & Go Truck - July 2011

One Stop Hire, the largest independent hirer of power tools in the North West of England, with over 7,500 pieces of equipment available to hire have just taken delivery of their first Plant & Go truck from KFS.

With a broad spectrum of customers, from the DIY enthusiast through to large regional contractors, One Stop need a vehicle which they could deliver not only general hire equipment, but also light plant, fencing, and scaffold towers.

The Plant and Go truck as well as being able to transport all of the above within a 3.5 ton vehicle , offered excellent fuel economy, safe working height when loading and unloading and anyone within the organisation can drive it making the truck extremely flexible.

Steve Hitchen Managing Director at One Stop Hire commented, We had been considering the KFS product for some time but were unsure about moving away from the traditional Ford Transit fitted with a tail lift. Ian Knight (KFS Special Vehicles Ltd) was kind enough to call in with a demonstrator and offered us contact details of existing users all of whom had nothing but praise for the truck. Initial feed back from everybody has been excellent so we are excited about putting the vehicle into service and possibly looking at further units for our 8 depots.

One Stop Hire Limited, the Northwest's largest independent tool & equipment hirer with depots at Blackpool, Preston, Wrightington, Wigan, Bolton, Widnes, Liverpool & Manchester has invested in 12 new Boss X3X mini scissor lifts to compliment its fleet of Pop-Up & Genie GS1932 products.

Kieran Power, Operations Director commented, "Customer demand for the Boss X Range has increased greatly recently & the offering we now have satisfies 95% of our clients preferences. We have a fleet of 40 small powered access & we can see this growing, as usual our strategy is to buy nothing bigger than we can carry on our pickups & trailers. Powered & non powered access demand is our fastest growing product range currently and return on capital is well above the average on other ranges."

One Stop Hire 'Going For Gold'

The Northwest's largest independent tool and plant hirer One Stop Hire Ltd has completed a 'None Stop Golf Day' in aid of the Princes Trust 'Going for Gold' sports fundraising challenge, a well deserved youth charity which helps over 40,000 unemployed young people in the North West each year to gain an education or training, hopefully enabling them to move into work.

Companies taking part in the 'Going for Gold' challenge were able to organise any kind of sporting event in order to raise funds, 'One stop Hire' chose to host a sponsored golf day, playing three courses in one day. Steve Hitchen, Managing Director said, "We really enjoyed the challenge, it was a long but great day of golf and we reckon we walked no less than 18 miles. We would like to take this opportunity of thanking our staff and customers who took part in the day and our very generous sponsors for their kind donations. We are delighted to announce that we have raised over £2,000.00 for the princes Trust"

One Stop Hire Ltd, the largest independent Tool & Equipment hirer in the Northwest has agreed a strategic partnership with Northwest based Lifting Gear UK Ltd.

The agreement will see One Stop Hire market the full range of services offered by LGUK which include the Hire, Sale, Repair & Testing of all ranges of lifting appliances through its sales force & branch network.

Current One Stop Hire clients will have the option to source their lifting equipment requirements through the One Stop Hire depot network directly should they choose & LGUK clients will be offered the very best terms on their Tool & Equipment requirements from One Stop Hire.

By utilising the combined companies customer databases both parties hope to generate new business in new market sectors & offer clients a more comprehensive service offering.

LGUK was established in 2007 in Preston & now has branches in Manchester, Liverpool & London with further expansion planned. The company has the widest range of lifting equipment available in the market & has a design & fabrication service for bespoke lifting challenges for lifts from 1 tonne to 500 tonnes.

Baptism of Hire - Article in SEM publication - Dec 2010

When Steve and Danielle Hitchen decided to invest in their own plant hire business, little did they realise they would end up owning his old employer.

Having seen at close quarters one of the biggest sales in UK plant hire, Steve Hitchen has gone back to his roots and started all over again.

Around 16 years after he left Bolton-based tool and small plant hire company PSL to join crane giant Ainscough, Steve Hitchen was back as its joint owner and managing director.

He had been working for PSL for seven years when in September 1993 he landed a job at Ainscough as sales manager for the Wirral area. He worked his way up through the organisation and was operations director of the heavy cranes section in the run up to the £255m MBO in mid-2007.

Pulling out the Stops – Article in EHN publication – Sept 2010

The North West's largest independent tool and plant hirer, One Stop Hire Ltd, has opened its latest depot in Widnes, Cheshire – the eighth branch in less than 12 months since the Company purchased the assets of Power Supply Ltd and Wigan-based SJS Hire in October 2009.

Steve Hitchen, Managing Director of One Stop Hire Ltd said "We are delighted to have opened our first organic depot in Widnes. Our location on Waterloo Road is ideal for our existing clients sites in the area, as well as the many local building, petrochemical and engineering companies. It is also strategically placed to complement our existing depots in Blackpool, Preston, Wrightington, Wigan, Bolton, Manchester and Liverpool.

The newly-refurbished, 6000sq.ft hire centre has been stocked with all the latest equipment and consumables and will be staffed by local people with a wealth of knowledge in the area and the industry.

One Stop Hire Ltd is currently investing heavily in new equipment & ISO accreditations in Health & Safety and the Environment to enable us to offer clients the highest standard service whilst remaining competitive at all times.

January Update Newsletter

Dear Valued Customer,

Firstly, may I wish you a happy and prosperous 2010 from all the team at One Stop Hire.

In October 2009 I wrote to all the clients of Power Supply Ltd and SJS Hire Tools Ltd to inform you of the acquisition of the two businesses by One Stop Hire Ltd and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you that have supported us thus far with your hire business and to update you on our integration process and future plans.

Firstly we have now completed our Depot mergers and overleaf is a list, with contact details, of our branch network in the North West.  Also on the list are the details of our new, purpose-built Preston Depot which we will move into on 30th January and our new Widnes Depot which is due to open on 1st April this year.

In terms of the fleet we have taken out of service over 1000 items of old and outdated equipment and started replacing these items with new equipment and current specification pieces; our fleet holding now starts at approximately 6,500 items.

We have also increased our maintenance staffing levels and we have created a central repair and equipment refurbishment centre at our Wrightington Branch to ensure all our equipment is serviced, tested and maintained to the highest standard.

Our Depot facilities have all been undergoing upgrades and refurbishment to bring them up to the highest standards for our visiting clients and for our staff to operate in and these can be viewed on our website at

Our 2010 price list and catalogue are now available, along with lots of promotional goods. We have tailored our rates to be highly competitive in the market place. One Stop Hire buys SJS & PSL

One Stop Hire Ltd is now the largest Independent Tool & Equipment Hirer in the North West. In less than a week the Company that was started in 2006 as a "Virtual Hire Website" has taken over not one, but two of the North West's longest established tool and equipment hirers.

The first deal to complete was the purchase of the assets of Bolton-based PSL, which went into administration on 30th September. PSL had branches throughout the region and a vast array of equipment and many quality employees. The second deal to go through was the acquisition of SJS Hire Tools Ltd, based in Wrightington, Wigan from Steve Etchells and Family. SJS has three successful branches with a small team of long-serving, dedicated individuals and a large selection of well-maintained equipment available for hire.

One Stop Hire Ltd's owners, Steve and Danielle Hitchen, have over 40 years' combined experience in the Plant Hire sector, including many years in plant, tool and mobile crane hire. Managing Director, Steve Hitchen, said "we are absolutely delighted to have acquired such long-established businesses, PSL was started in 1984 and SJS was formed in 1982, both companies being operated by many of the original staff that have been at the firms since formation. Collectively the companies carry over 8000 items of hire equipment. To complement this they have facilities to repair customers' own tools, plant and equipment and also sell a vast array of tools, workwear and consumables. Both PSL and SJS have loyal and deep rooted customer bases in their respective areas and we very much look forward to servicing their requirements in the future."

Steve Etchells, former MD of SJS commented on the sale, "my family and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our many customers and suppliers who have supported us over the past 27 years, and a big thank you must go to our loyal staff who with the backing of Steve and Danielle will maintain the levels of commitment and service that have become synonymous with SJS Hire Tools Ltd."

Steve Hitchen continued to say, "Our plan is to re-brand and integrate the two businesses, creating synergy benefits, taking customer service to new heights. We will be employing over 40 people at 10 strategically located Hire Centres in the North West with plans for expansion in the not too distant future.
