About Chorley

Lancashire market town Chorley, home of the famous Chorley cake is the located in the north west of england 9 miles north of Wigan and 10 miles south of Preston. Like most towns in this region, the cotton industry was the primary cause for the development. In modern day Chorley, most of the factory chimneys have been demolished but the number of mill buildings and terraced housing for mill workers are testament to the town's industrial past. Chorley's origins go back to the bronze age, the name of the town itself is a degradation of Anglo-Saxon Ceorla-leahm, which means "the peasants' clearing". As well as cotton production, Chorley was a producer of coal. Pits in Duxbury Woods, by Grundy's Land and Carr Lane produced coal for the region. Ellerbeck Colliery to the south of Chorley closed in 1987.
