About Ormskirk
Ormskirk is located in Lancashire on the rise of small near the middle of the West Lancashire Plain. 13 miles north of Liverpool and 9 miles southeast of Southport, the name Ormskirk from Old Norse name Ormres Kirkja. It is presumed that Ormr (meaning dragon) was a Viking settler in the area who converted to Christianity and founded a krikja or church. However, no archeological records exist to support this theory. Despite this religious past, Ormskirk is an unparished area. It is surrrounded by the parishes of Lathom, Scarisbrick, Aughton, Burscough and Birckerstaffe. Ormskirk is not mentioned in the 1066 Doomesday Book, this could have been because the town was incorporated into Lathom at this stage. This is evidenced by the Lord of Lathom granting Ormskirk Church to Burscough Priory around 1189. Modern day Ormskirk is mainly a retail centre featuring a number of popular bars and resturants. Footballers Billy Ayrem, Stephen Warnock and Robbie Slater were born in Ormskirk. Actor Jonathan Pryce and Broadcaster Stuart Maconie both studied in the town.
